Redemption Road K9’s American Kennel Club (AKC) Classes

At the Redemption Road K9, we believe that with the right training, all dogs can be well-behaved dogs, and that all owners have the potential to be great owners. That is why we offer the entire AKC Family Dog Program in-house. These courses are designed to help you and your dog be the best team you can be. Since 1989, the American Kennel Club has helped over 1 million dogs and their owners participate in puppy classes and Canine Good Citizen (CGC) courses geared towards mastering basic skills that instill confidence and good manners in and out of the home.

Not only does the AKC Family Dog Program create long-lasting trust between you and your pup, but it also ensures that you’ll be good neighbors and friends to everyone around you. If you plan on going beyond the basics, the CGC also lays a solid foundation for other AKC obedience and sport activities like agility, tracking and performance events.

With in-house AKC Approved Instructors and Evaluators, Redemption Road K9 offers monthly Private Training, Group Training Classes and tests from beginner to advanced, including

NEW AKC Temperament Training & Testing!

Redemption Road K9 is now offering the AKC Temperament Test! There are 193 AKC recognized breeds. What makes a specific breed unique is not only the dog’s physical appearance, but its distinctive temperament.

The AKC Temperament Test (ATT) was developed to bring focus and provide a meaningful evaluation to assess the temperament of our canine companions.

The ATT tests how a dog reacts to a variety of stimuli. Desirable traits are that the dog will be emotionally stable, inquisitive, cooperative, appropriately social for its breed, biddable and demonstrates the ability to recover from a startling situation in a reasonable amount of time.

Undesirable traits are fear, shyness, lack of cooperation and an inability to recover from unfamiliar or unexpected situations. Examples of undesirable behaviors include being afraid of friendly strangers or unfamiliar stimuli, obsessive barking, and aggression.

In the ATT, dogs are tested in 6 categories of stimuli that include:

  1. Social
  2. Auditory
  3. Visual
  4. Tactile
  5. Proprioceptive (motion)
  6. Unexpected stimulus

Our AKC classes are open to all dogs, including purebreds and mixed breeds. Dogs who pass the test may receive a certificate or title from the American Kennel Club.

Our programs are considered a good beginning step for any advanced training with dogs in obedience, agility and therapy dog work. With a CGC award, some insurance companies may even provide coverage over breeds of dogs not otherwise insurable. Furthermore, the CGC is required for dogs living in some condos and apartments.

Whatever the reason you decide that you and your dog should take the CGC—to advance your dog’s training, as a precursor for therapy work, or because it’s a nice certificate to earn, there are plenty of opportunities available for you to accomplish the proper training and take the test and for your dog to earn the Canine Good Citizen award—the gold standard of behavior for dogs in our communities.

Our AKC training classes run in 6-week cycles and focus on positive reinforcement techniques to improve the communication between you and your dog and strengthen your bond. Our certified trainers will provide constructive feedback and tips for how to continue your dog’s training at home.

  • 1 hour per week (missed classes will have the opportunity to attend makeup sessions)
  • $225 Group or $300 Private – Pre-registration required
  • Participating dogs must have current Rabies, Bordetella, Distemper/Parvo vaccination records
